Modern Nature - Further Listening Playlist
We're big fans of Modern Nature here, their debut, How To Live, was our 2019 album of the year and we had the great pleasure of them playing our Christmas party too. This new album, the follow up to last year's Annual, is another step up. A beguiling, free-flowing, career highlight, which takes in some of British free music luminaries such as saxophonist Evan Parker, pianist Alexander Hawkins, bassist John Edwards and violinist Alison Cotton, as well as long term collaborators Jeff Tobias and Jim Wallis. Island Of Noise is available as a limited boxset, which features an expanded instrumental version of the main album, and a 36 page book, with 10 contributions from artists & writers in conjunction with, and inspired by, a song on the album.

Here’s two handfuls of songs that have soundtracked the years that have passed since our first record How To Live; many of which have inspired our new record Island Of Noise. What do they have in common? I don’t know, but there’s perhaps an openness to this music that I think we also inhabit. Like many of you, I discover music by reading about artists I love and then exploring their roots and the branches they inspire. A recent(ish) obsession has been the music and compositions of Carla Bley… from her, it’s easy to get to Paul Bley and then the seminal Jimmy Giuffre trio.
