Peru Bravo tells the whirlwind story of a culture in flux. During the late ‰Û÷60s and early ‰Û÷70s, Lima boasted dozens of young bands full of ideas, spontaneous and unfazed by the instability in Peru. Featuring alternative heroes Traffic Sound and Laghonia alongside a selection of unheralded short-lived groups, Peru Bravo is a funk-fuelled ride through a radical decade. Like its predecessor, Tiger‰۪s Milk‰۪s debut LP ‰Û÷Peru Maravilloso‰۪, Peru Bravo digs deep. It unearths the full spectrum of incendiary underground funk, soul and psych sounds that emerged following the first TV performance by the Peruvian Grand Daddies of garage punk, Los Saicos in 1965. By ‰Û÷66, there were dozens of guitar based groups in Lima playing a mix of instrumental surf, rock ‰Û÷n roll and garage punk. With the growing influence of West coast American rock, funk and soul and British psychedelia and rock, the underground music scene in Peru diversified rapidly. It would, however, be only a matter of years before this burgeoning movement disappeared just as quickly as a new, uncompromising military dictatorship led by General Juan Velasco Alvarado, took hold. Artists on Peru Bravo include psychedelic ensembles Laghonia & Telegraph Avenue, both heavily influenced by American West coast bands like Santana & Jefferson Airplane. Also featured are Black Sugar‰۪s hard funk, Traffic Sound‰۪s rock-edged boogaloo and the raw-but-sweet harmonies of Thee Image, all under-pinned by a deep soulfulness that pervaded much of the music of the time. The album also features three dynamite cover versions of Jimi Hendrix‰۪s ‰Û÷Hey Joe‰۪, Steppenwolf‰۪s ‰Û÷Sookie Sookie‰۪ and the Meters‰۪ ‰Û÷Cissy Strut‰۪. In Peru, the word ‰Û÷bravo‰۪ has a double meaning. It can refer to something that is ‰Û÷edgy‰۪ or ‰Û÷dangerous‰۪ but can also be a celebratory exclamation like in English. Like the cult music of Haiti's Vodou and Cuba's Santeria or the roots music of Belize's Garifuna (all of which Soul Jazz have travelled to record), Gwo Ka is the musical and cultural product of the region's African ancestry, forcibly brought to the Caribbean through slavery.
\r\r
Gwo Ka exists only in Guadeloupe. Guadeloupe is a very different island from much of the Caribbean, in that it remains a 'department' of its original colonial master, France. Here, the currency is the Euro and the baker sells croissants and cafe au lait. This constant 'European-ising' of the island means that Gwo Ka plays a fundamental and important role in the defining of Guadeloupean identity. As an African-derived music, its position as a counter-balance to French influence means that the definition of how and what Gwo Ka represents is also in a constant state of flux.
\r\r
In contrast to this ever-changing state of political and cultural definition, the music itself has no problems of identity. Drawing on hundreds of years of musical and cultural strength, the music of Gwo Ka remains both steeped in tradition and, at the same time, progressive and forward-looking. New melodies and compositions (all the songs featured here are new compositions) are performed over a long-established group of unique rhythm patterns played by master drummers (including playing with their feet!). In this African-derived song structure of call and response, the vocalist styles also draw from the equally powerful history of the French chanson singers to create a truly unique combination.
\r\r
Tradisyon Ka, made up of some of the island's finest singers and master drummers, is part of a powerful network of politicised Gwo Ka groups on the island - upholding the traditions and cultural importance of Gwo Ka as part of a larger process of defining the identity of Guadeloupe and Guadeloupe culture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/various-soul-jazz-records-presents-gwo-ka-music-of-guadeloupe-west-indies-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438645
various-the-sound-of-siam-2-molam-and-luk-thung-isan-from-north-east-thailand-1970-1982
Various - The Sound of Siam 2 - Molam and Luk Thung Isan from North-East Thailand 1970-1982
Soundway presents the The Sound of Siam 2 - Molam and Luk Thung Isan from North-East Thailand 1970 - 1982 features 19 tracks, many appearing outside of Thailand for the first time. Both CD and double LP and is accompanied with detailed liner notes written by compilers Chris Menist and Maft Sai. Soundway's second foray into South East Asia is focused on North-East Thailand, the epicentre of Molam and Luk Thung Isan music. Hypnotic phin and khaen riffs, pulsing, electrified country rhythms and heartfelt vocals punctuate another journey into the lesser known reaches of 1970s Thai music. The term molam is actually two separate words pushed together: Mo meaning 'expert' or 'doctor' and lam meaning 'to sing'. Hence the literal translation means 'singing expert'. Many molam records have extended intros that allow a vocalist to establish the theme of the song, as well as flex their improvisational muscles. Luk thung (literally 'song of the countryside') is a much broader, rural style that had a bigger impact nationally. Artists like Saksiam Petchompu began fusing this style with molam, a move which propelled him to national fame. Now largely living on the margins of the West African nation whose political and cultural life is dominated by the Bambara people of the south, they nonetheless retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs and music. Hailing from the heart of old Gao, Oumar Toure and Aliou Toure were, like most kids growing up in the ancient city, obsessed with hip-hop, R&B and bands like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. By their early 20s, having met young guitarist Garba Toure (son of Oumar Toure, long term percussionist in Ali Farka Toure's band), they began to make music while at university in Bamako. Their deep attachment to the home grown songs and dances of the Songhoy, both traditional styles and the modern guitar based sounds popularised by the likes of Baba Salah and above all Ali Farka Toure, was helping shape their nascent music which sought to blend the trad and the modern, the homegrown and the foreign, the youthful and the ancient. The growing unrest in the north of Mali saw Oumar, Aliou, Garba and many of their family take refuge down south in Bamako as hostilities worsened in early 2012 and Songhoy Blues were born from this adversity. "We met up (in Bamako)," remembers Garba, "and told ourselves we couldn't just stay shipwrecked by a crisis like this. We had to form a band." They roped in a young drummer called Nathanial 'Nat' Dembele from Bamako and baptised their band Songhoy Blues in celebration of their displaced people and culture. Soon a fixture on the Bamako club and bar live music treadmill, their break came in September 2013 when French music manager Marc-Antoine Moreau was in the city to scout for musical talent on behalf of Africa Express. Prompted by local studio owner Barou Diallo. Aliou Toure cold-called Marc- Antoine - an audition quickly followed and subsequently the band were invited to record a song with Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the track, Soubour, ended up as opening track on the Africa Express album, Maison des Jeunes. All those old 'world music' prejudices have no place here. Songhoy Blues are four talented, hungry, sharp and outward-looking young men from a part of the world that has had more than it's share and pain and conflict in recent years. But it has given far more than its share of music and joy to the world in return over the past four decades. That place may seem strange, alien and 'exotic' to some but deep down, Songhoy Blues are a familiar proposition: four young men, guitar, drums, bass and vocals, driving rhythms, big hearts and a story to tell.
LP - With CD Version.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/songhoy-blues-music-in-exile-south-records-ltd.png?v=1571438660
various-hasabe
Various - Hasabe

Absolutely killer compilation of Ethiopian R&B from the golden age of Ethiopian music. The project initially took off in August 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector Samy Ben Redjeb arrived in Cotonou, Benin, 'without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what I found in the process cannot really be described in words'. This first trip was followed by eight more to the region. Thirty months and few thousand records later Analog Africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation.

Just like with the label's first two releases - albums by Zimbabwean 70s bands the Green Arrows and Hallelujah Chicken Run Band - the essence of Analog Africa is clear yet again: searching in dusty warehouses for forgotten music to keep it alive. Ben Redjeb explains: 'Some of the track we've already released would have been lost for ever if we didn't do it. With 'African Scream Contest' this is even more the case as some of the bands and musicians were, and still are, completely unknown. Some of the tracks have not even been released and I found a lost master tape at the producer's house who decided not to release it and just left it aside.' (The compilation contains a track by Vincent Ahehehinnou & Poly-Rythmo which wasn't even released in Benin.)

All the tracks have been officially licensed, usually from the artists who Ben Redjeb also met with for detailed research. He conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44-page booklet which also includes many rare photographs directly received from the artists.

Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson Francaise. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo - sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria - exposed Beninese and Togolese musicians to Highlife music.

The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin's modern music. Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals - Sakpata, Sato, Agbadja, Tchenkoumé and many others - were fused to Soul and Latin music as early as the mid-1960s and later to Funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation.

In the late 60s and early 70s rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Hallyday became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off.

What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one semi-tone away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting.

One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are of course featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninese. Their biggest song, 'Gbeti Madjro' is believed to have revolutionised the music industry in Benin in the 70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and the hypnotic rhythms as well as screams ÌÊ la James Brown - after this song many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation.

Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, 'Agoudas.' Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances (such as Kaléta and Buriyanj) and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninese rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninese music.

The proximity of the giant neighbour Nigeria can be heard on the track 'Djanfa Magni' which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani Koné fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Koné whose career started in Mali as the founder and band leader of the Rail Band de Bamako, had played with Fela Kuti for a short while hence the strong Afrobeat influence.

There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. So delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from 70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/various-african-scream-contest-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438693
various-outlier-recordings-from-madagascar
Various - Outlier: Recordings From Madagascar
\r
This collection is an impeccable and crystalline assortment of beautiful music from the deep southwestern provinces of Menabe and Tulear in Madagascar, recorded and assembled by CHARLES BROOKS. Sega first developed as an insular music and dance form after slaves arrived on Mauritius (then ̨le de France) from East Africa and Madagascar during the 17th to 19th centuries, using Cr̩ole language and rhythms played on the large ravanne circular drum, the triangle and the maravanne, a box filled with dried seeds. Sega was essentially frowned upon and marginalised by the Mauritian bourgeois until the 1950s when singer Ti Frere began to play a more Westernised fusion of sega. Through Ti Frere and his contemporaries like Serge Lebrasse, the music began to be popularised during the '60s and became fully accepted after the 'Night Of The Morne' event in 1964 as the Creole community asserted ist cultural identity. 'Soul Sok Sega' documents the heyday of sega in Mauritius during the 1970s as a new generation of contemporary artists broke through. Jazz, soul, funk and rock elements all began to be effortlessly infused into traditional sega folk roots to create some inspired fusions. A talented new wave of artists including Jean- Claude, Claudio, Marie Josee and Roger Clency became domestic stars and began to take the music to international stages for the first time. Meanwhile, cult artists like the James Brown-influenced Ti L'Afrique, Coulouce and Christophe all enjoyed a more brief but important moment in the spotlight.åÊ Since this era, sega has now been adopted as the national music of Mauritius and the original '70s music is a revelation for any fans of tropical music and world sounds. Strut's album features extensive sleeve notes from long time Mauritian cultural champion, Percy Yip Tong, including new artist interviews, photos and original vinyl artwork. The compilation is by DJ duo La Basse Tropicale (Natty Ho and Konsole), based in the neighbouring island of La Reunion. All formats are unmixed, with all tracks never reissued internationally since they were originally available.
2LP - Double LP with CD Version.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/various-soul-sok-sega-sega-sounds-from-mauritius-1973-1979-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438703
peace-black-power
Peace - Black Power

First official reissue of this essential Zamrock album, painstakingly restored, remastered and pieced together from multiple copies of the incredibly rare original album. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it. Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, FunanÌÁ was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences - often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were ‰ÛÏcaught in the act‰۝. In light of such persecution the genre of FunanÌÁ began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde‰۪s independence came a lifting of the ban placed on FunanÌÁ. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty - many upcoming artists embraced FunanÌÁ, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990‰۪s, however, that FunanÌÁ in its traditional form was actually recorded.

It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori's unique playing style - a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking FunanÌÁ beyond its rural roots. The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of FunanÌÁ. Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career - he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Buoyed by an explosive oil boom and a return to democracy after a series of military dictatorships, Nigeria's economy in the years of the early '80's was mirrored by its recording industry as countless young artists and groups hit the airwaves and dancefloors of the capital and beyond. It was a glossy, brash new form of pop music born out of ashes of late 1970s disco and funk and, just as in America, was the soundtrack to a new generation for whom money, style and flirtation trumped the overblown psychedelia of the previous decade. Eager to sound as American as possible with no hint of the fervor for afro-beat, afro-rock and afrocentric thinking that the 1970s had thrown up, a new generation of young artists and performers turned their backs on their cultural roots in music and sought a new kind of stardom and fame firmly connected to the glossy, snazzy world of the 1980s that was erupting in the USA and Europe.The 1970s flares and cuban heels began to disappear, in their place came sleek suits, rolled-up sleeves, bow-ties, jumpsuits, leather jackets, greased hair and a firm nod in the stylistic direction of Michael Jackson.
\r
\r
\r
3LP - Triple Vinyl in Gatefold Sleeve with Download, bonus 7" and Large 8 Page Booklet.
\r

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/various-doing-it-in-lagos-boogie-pop-and-disco-in-1980s-nigeria-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438747
tinariwen-elwan
Tinariwen - Elwan
\r
\r
The new album Elwan by Tinariwen could well have been called Exile on Main Street. Others have already thought of that, but the idea is apt. As is the painful paradox, if you consider that while Tinariwen were criss-crossing the globe on their recent triumphant tours, the frontiers that encircle their desert home were closing and forcing them into exile to record their new album Elwan, released on Wedge. In recent years, Tinariwen‰۪s homeland, a Saharan mountain range between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria, has been transformed into a conflict zone. While the songs on the new record evoke those cherished deserts of home, they were recorded a long way away in two distinctive bursts. In 2014 the band stopped at Rancho de la Luna studios in the desert of California‰۪s Joshua Tree National Park. While location proved particularly propitious in terms of creativity, the human climate was just as favorable, as musicians dropped by to add their own touch. Guitarist Matt Sweeny (Johnny Cash, Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power), Kurt Vile, musician Alan Johannes, who produced Queens of the Stone Age, a band with whom Mark Lanegan, the other guest has been a singer. All of it honed by engineer Andrew Schepps, who has worked with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johny Cash, and Jay Z. Two years later in M‰۪Hamid El Ghizlane, an oasis in southern Morocco, near the Algerian frontier, the band set up their tents to record, accompanied by the local musical youth and a Ganga outfit (a group of Berber ‰Û÷gnawa‰۪ trance musicians). The resulting album is called Elwan (‰Û÷The Elephants‰۪), not Exile On Main Street, though it fits nicely into that ‰Û÷road record‰۪ category. In American cinema, a road movie always unfolds the same way. Characters travel in search of some truth or revelation. But they always end up reconnecting with their own past. Of course, it‰۪s an impossible return, because that past has been erased. It‰۪s the same for this record, so musically powerful and yet poignant: every song evokes a land that can no longer be found, with all that this implies in terms of emotional range, from nostalgia for a joyous past to the tragic recent loss of a territory, and of the dream that it nourished.
\r
\r
\r
CD - Digipack.
\r
\r
\r
2LP - Heavyweight double LP with etching on Side 4. The record is a mix of spirited cover versions and authentically Nuyorican-sounding originals with a Colombian twist, while the cover art, enhanced by an abundance of blood-red design, is quite something, featuring PÌ_per Pimienta and Fruko dressed as gun-toting hippies doing drugs in a cemetery while a transistor radio plays. Just as eye-opening as the music is celebratory! According to Fruko, the Woodstock generation was finally making itself felt in Colombia, and they were embodying the name of the album literally, ostensibly pointing out the dangers of said drug-thug lifestyle in no uncertain terms (the police threw them out during the shoot thinking they were authentic gangsters).
\r
Produced and engineered by Fruko's uncle Mario "Pachanga" RincÌ_n, the album has an uncompromisingly stark, hard sound that is appealing to today's collectors of 'salsa brava' just as it was impactful on the Colombian scene when it was made at the beginning of the 1970s (very little of this type of music was produced in Colombia at the time). Unlike the first Tesos album, with a two trumpet line-up and fairly simple arrangements, this more mature recording added another trumpet and two trombones for a more robust brass attack. Additionally, instead of basic salsa, there are many different rhythms ‰ÛÒ guaguancÌ_, bomba, plena, oriza, bolero, cha-cha-chÌÁ, descarga and Latin soul. Though Fruko's sound at this stage wore its New York, Havana and San Juan sources on its sleeve ‰ÛÒ Willie ColÌ_n, Javier VÌÁzquez, Richie Ray to mention a few progenitors ‰ÛÒ, at the same time the album has a uniquely Colombian approach to these influences with the bounciness of coastal music like cumbia being felt throughout.
\r\r
The title song is a 'guaguan-plena' version of Dominica y su Conjunto's original 'acuyuye' (ie pachanga) hit of the same name from a decade earlier. Following that is Fruko's take on Cuban pianist Javier Vazquez's driving salsa dura anthem 'Mi verdadero son'. For a little variety, next up is a rendition of Puerto Rican pianist Raphy Leavitt's famous lovelorn bolero-cha 'Payaso' from 1971. PÌ_per Pimienta brings the energy up again with Fruko's own bomba 'Los niches' ‰ÛÒ a party tune with an Afro-Colombian theme. The side finishes out with more cover versions: the double-entendre 'La fruta bomba' by Cuban trovador Maximiliano "Bimbi" SÌÁnchez y su TrÌ_o Oriental and the fiery rumba gitana 'Achilipu' ‰ÛÒ first recorded by Barcelona's Gypsy Queen, Dolores Vargas, and subsequently made into a salsa groover by Puerto Rico's El Gran Combo in 1971. Side B kicks off with one of Fruko's favorite Afro-Cuban artists, the conguero and SanterÌ_a singer Silvestre M̩ndez, with 'A bailar oriza' (made famous by Cortijo y su Combo in the 1950s). After a wild descarga (jam session) track, we are treated to a fun pair of cover tunes: Johnny Zamot's 'Bomba africana' (more triangle!) and the old Afro-centric chestnut by folkloric Cuban rumbero Alberto Zayas, 'Baho Kende' ‰ÛÒ a hit for Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera in the 1950s but done here in the early Willie ColÌ_n style. The record finishes off with another Fruko original written with his Discos Fuentes colleague Isaac Villanueva. The lyrics are from the point of view of the poor country peasant leaving the mountains and escaping the slavery of rural poverty for what he thinks will be the promise of opportunity dubiously offered by "The Big City".
\r
This reissue features as a bonus the Latin soul track 'Tihuanaco' (a cover of Peruvian pianist Alfredito Linares), which appeared on the US edition of the LP.
\r
Pablo Yglesias aka DJ Bongohead

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/fruko-a-la-memoria-del-muerto-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438767
los-yogas-canabrava
Combo Los Yogas - Canabrava
\r
Combo Los Yogas was a short-lived early Colombian salsa band from MedellÌ_n directed and arranged by AnÌ_bal Jos̩ ́ngel Echeverri, the famous antioque̱o keyboardist known as AnÌ_bal ́ngel or simply AnÌÁn. With the influence of New York's burgeoning young Latin scene being absorbed by certain sectors of the youth in South America at the end of the 1960s, AnÌ_bal ́ngel must have felt the urge to join the fray, so in 1968 he founded Los Yogas to explore this new phenomenon from the north. An overview of the Zamrock scene, from its ascension to its fall to its resurgence. By the mid 1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though the country‰۪s first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itself under his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. Kaunda protected Zambia from war, but his country descended into isolation and poverty as he supported rebel movements in neighboring countries Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and stood up against apartheid South Africa. This is the environment in which the 70s rock revolution that has come to be known as Zamrock flourished. It‰۪s no wonder that the Zambian musicians taken by American and European influences gravitated to the dark side of the rock and funk spectrum. The book, written by Eothen Alapatt and Leonard Koloko is the first investigation into the Zamrock scene, and is filled with original record artwork and rarely-seen photos of Zamrock‰۪s best ensembles. By the mid-1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though the country‰۪s first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itself under his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Fuzz guitars were commonplace, as were driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown‰۪s funk as Jimi Hendrix‰۪s rock predominated. Musical themes, mainly sung in the country‰۪s constitutional language, English, were often bleak. In present day Zambia, Zamrock markers were few. Only a small number of the original Zamrock godfathers that remained in the country survived through the late ‰۪90s. AIDS decimated this country, and uncontrollable inflation forced the Zambian rockers that could afford to flee into something resembling exile. This was not a likely scene to survive - but it did.
