Alison Statton began her recording career with Philip and Stuart Moxham in Young Marble Giants, one of the most unique and important bands to come out of the UK post-punk / independent scene. YMG dissolved in 1981, at which point Statton began writing with Wrexham native Mark 'Spike' Williams, one of the brains behind Z Block Records and a member of the band Reptile Ranch. They joined forces with guitarist Simon Booth to form Weekend, and recorded the exquisite demo versions of 'Drumbeat' (later titled 'Drumbeat For Baby'), 'Red Planes', 'Nostalgia' and 'Summerdays' that are collected on this new 12". At the heart of the record are two truly remarkable pieces: 'Red Planes' and 'Nostalgia'. The former is a dubwise dream-pop epic, Statton's dispassionate, Nico-esque vocal wafting over a clucking Boss DR 55 pulse and seismic bass detonations, while Williams' violin, in Alison's words, "soars and dives and weaves through every possible mood with no inhibitions, creating an almost psychedelic feel, with a menacing undercurrent". It's somehow both starker and more richly atmospheric than the version that appears on the band's debut album, 'La Varieté' (Rough Trade, 1982), not to mention significantly longer - nine minutes in total. Our only complaint is that it doesn't last for nineteen. 'Nostalgia', meanwhile, is surely one of the most perfectly elegiac songs committed to tape in the post-punk era. More fleshed-out than the La Varieté version, the instrumentation here - notably Statton's yearning recorder part ("Very Eno," as Spike astutely observes) - amplifies the emotional resonance of an already heart-stopping lyric. Written by Spike and Dave Hoddel, 'Nostalgia' is a poignant meditation on the attraction, and the danger, of dwelling on the past. Shorn of the jazzy flourishes that would define the subsequent studio version, 'Drumbeat' (later titled 'Drumbeat For Baby') has a brittle, choppier quality more in line with Young Marble Giants than Weekend; it remains one of Williams and Statton's most infectious compositions. The instrumental 'Summerdays', is a different beast entirely to the cut on La Varieté; it's primarily a showcase of Simon Booth's lyrical guitar-playing, at times reminiscent of the courtly psychedelia of early Felt or Vini Reilly, and reminding us of Weekend's role as godparents of the nascent indie-pop movement. Jazz became an increasingly prominent component of the Weekend sound, and by the time of 'La Varieté' - their sole studio LP - they had welcomed jazzmen Larry Stabbins (saxophone), Roy Dodds (drums) and Dawson Miller (percussion) into their line-up. But despite its idiosyncratic brilliance and long-lasting influence (Belle & Sebastian and Kalima are but two groups who owe it an enormous debt), nothing on 'La Varieté', or on the handful of singles and live recordings Weekend put their name to before disbanding in 1983, comes close to matching the raw, impressionistic power of the '81 demos.

The four demos were released as a stand-alone CD by Vinyl Japan in 1995, and included as bonus tracks on Cherry Red's most recent CD reissue of
La Variet̩; however, until now they have never appeared on vinyl. Following their quietly released 2011 debut 'American Specialties', 'Light Up Gold' caught the ears of everyone paying even a little bit of attention, garnering glowing reviews across the board for its weird colours and raw energy, saturated punk songs that offered crystal clear lyrical snapshots of city life. It was immediately memorable, a vivid portrait of ragged days, listlessness, aimlessness and urgency, broadcast with the intimacy of hearing a stranger's thoughts as you passed them on the street. As it goes with these things, the band went on tour for a short eternity, spending most of 2013 on the road, their sound growing more direct in the process and their observations expanding beyond life at home. Constant touring was broken up by three recording sessions that would make up the new album, and the time spent in transit comes through in repeated lyrical themes of displacement, doubt and situational captivity. To be sure, 'Sunbathing Animal' isn't a record about hopelessness, as any sort of incarceration implies an understanding of freedom and peace of mind. Fleeting moments of bliss are also captured in its grooves, and extended at length as if to preserve them. Pointed articulations of these ideas are heard as schizoid blues rants, shrill guitar leads, purposefully lengthy repetition and controlled explosions, reaching their peak on the blistering title track. A propulsive projection of how people might play the blues 300 years from now, 'Sunbathing Animal' is a roller coaster you can't get off, moving far too fast and looping into eternity. Much as 'Light Up Gold' and the subsequent EP 'Tally All The Things That You Broke' offered a uniquely tattered perspective on everyday city life, 'Sunbathing Animal' applies the same layered thoughts and sprawling noise to more cerebral, inward-looking themes. While heightened in its heaviness and mania, the album also represents a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and vision. Still rooted firmly in the unshackled exploration and bombastic playing of their earlier work, everything here is amplified in its lucidity and intent. The songs wander through threads of blurry brilliance, exhaustion and fury at the hilt of every note.åÊ

\r
CD - Jewel Case.
LP - Gatefold Sleeve, printed inner bag, Download Code, Standard Black Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/parquet-courts-sunbathing-animal-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1571438621
joy-division-unknown-pleasures
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Unknown Pleasures, the debut studio album from Joy Division, was first released in 1979 on Factory Records. Ostensibly the soundtrack for Jem Cohen's documentary, 'Instrument', the album is a glimpse into the creative process of one of punk's most adventurous and forward-thinking bands. The material stems from the 10 years between 1988 and '98 and, aside from some demo versions of songs that appeared in finished versions on 1998's 'End Hits', is largely composed of unreleased music. Fans who know Fugazi only from intense, tightly wound post-hardcore like their debut's anthem 'Waiting Room' will be astonished by the stylistic breadth of 'Instrument'. Types of songs never before expected of the band make appearances here, like Ian Makaye's poignant piano ballad, 'I'm So tired,' and the minor keyboard funk of 'Afterthought.' Even the songs that appeared on albums, like 'arpeggiator' and 'pink frosty,' take on new raw life in demo form, as much sketches as songs. as an album, 'Instrument' does feel like something unfinished, but as an accompaniment to a film that chronicles a restlessly creative band's philosophy and working process, it's a vital document.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/2497/products/fugazi-instrument-soundtrack-south-records-ltd.jpg?v=1595889840
fugazi-the-argument
Fugazi - The Argument

It's unfortunate that a band so forward looking as Fugazi has been criticized over and over for not remaking "Waiting Room" or "Repeater." Some have called them sellouts, regardless of the band's integrity and class, while others consider them elitists, "guiding" the Washington, D.C., scene. It happened so goddamn fast that if you missed the imaginal cut-off for inclusion by a few fucking weeks, you were forever written out of the picture. Believe me. Thurston and I wrote the book on this goddamn scene, and the Hi Sheriffs were just outside our temporal markers, despite the fact they'd played Tier 3, the Mudd Club and everywhere you'd think would matter. But look, they were as second gen No Wave as the Raybeats, the Bush Tetras and Eight Eyed Spy. If you have to ask why that was, and why such things were a matter of weeks rather than anything else, I dunno what to say. It's just how it was, and we all knew it. Shit moved fast. The fact that the Hi Sheriffs were devolved from the Girls -- the BEST band Boston ever birthed, as well as the only non-CLE band to ever record for Pere Ubu's label, Hearthan -- did not mean shit. Mark brought the first single up to the NY Rocker office a while later and Andy recognized the cover he was doing, but I assumed it was all just blown brain originals. Little did I know. This album is mostly made up of pre-first single live and rehearsal stuff, and it is just the sort of raw madness everyone wants to hear all the time. Even Lydia Lunch liked 'em. She did not record with them until later -- not long before she'd begin her Devil Dogs project -- but even she knew she was beyond No Wave at the point of Eight Eyed Spy. Recorded while living with Foxygen's Jonathan Rado at his rented house in Bloomington, the band had its first taste of a heavy Indiana summer, and all the humidity and insect life that buzzes along with it. The central core of the album is the 16 & a 1/2 minute track, "Destroy/Lost," recorded at the band's rehearsal space in January '74. Robin Hall vocalizes and Boris plays electric viola, but the bulk of the piece is screaming analog synth weirdness from Randy Cohen's Serge synthesizer.
\r\r
According to Robin, the track was recorded in hopes that it might be pared down to a single. Hard to imagine how the hell it might've been done (or in what universe), but it is a masterpiece of long-format insanity -- with Boris and Robin providing a context for the massive gallumping of the Serge. Additional players appear on some of the shorter tracks -- new music/free jazz saxophonist, Pete van Riper, on "Lithium Serenade"; Boris's electric viola on "Hydrogen Lullaby"; Chris Gray's guitar on "Mandible Mambo"; Rich Gold's Serge joins Boris' strings on "Ghost Note."
\r\r
The rest is the product of Randy's whacked-out compositional notions and his mastery of the Serge's patch-cords. Howard, Brian Eno and Coil - but the sound is uniquely and darkly Iceage.\r
\r
\r
The record fights with itself, in the story it tells and the sound it makes.
