Billy Mackenzie - Beyond The Sun
As one half of The Associates, Billy Mackenzie blazed a hugely colourful and influential trail through the 80s post-punk scene, before largely retreating from the limelight and much later signing to Nude Records (Suede, Geneva) shortly before the posthumous release of Beyond The Sun in 1997, his second post-Associates album. Billy Mackenzie committed suicide before Beyond The Sun was finished. It was left to Nude Recordsboss Saul Gaulpern to oversee its completion, and he commissioned suitably ornate piano, guitar andstring section overdubs to add colour to Billy's initial recordings. Seven of Beyond The Sun's ten tracks were produced by Cocteau Twins / This Mortal Coil man (and later Bella Union boss), Simon Raymonde, with the remainder being produced by Pascal Gabriel. Mackenzie is in fine voice on each of these tracks, which veer between his trademark synth-pop sound and a more contemporary Britpop flavour.
