Electric Eels - Die Electric Eels

Cleveland‰۪s electric eels (all lower case in homage to poetåÊe.e. cummings) is America‰۪s quintessential proto-punkåÊband. Formed in 1972 by singer Dave E. McManus andåÊguitarists John Morton and Brian McMahon, the groupåÊenlisted drummer Nick Knox (later of The Cramps) andåÊproducer Paul Marotta to record a flurry of catchy and genuinelyåÊfucked-up tunes. After only five legendary live performances‰ÛÓåÊcomplete with Dave E. in black leather jacketåÊcovered in rat-traps and playing a gas-powered lawnmoweråÊon stage‰ÛÓthe eels broke up in 1976 and posthumouslyåÊreleased their classic single Agitated on Rough Trade inåÊ1978, blazing a trail for high-art, low-concept rock.åÊAs Jon Savage writes in the liner notes, ‰ÛÏThere is somethingåÊheroic about the eels‰۪ isolation and uncompromisingåÊattitude: a fierceness that you can hear in these songs thatåÊstill resonates in a different time and world.‰۝åÊThis archival LP collects the eels‰۪ best material fromåÊ1974-75. From the loud and snotty ‰ÛÏAgitated‰۝ and its BsideåʉÛÏCyclotron‰۝ (which Johan Kugelberg listed as #1 inåÊhis top 100 punk singles) to the anarchic anthem ‰ÛÏJaguar
Ride‰۝ and the loose, bluesy sludge of ‰ÛÏAnxiety,‰۝ the albumåÊexorcises the demonic power of the Stooges and VelvetsåÊand captures the mystique of these outsider artists inventingåÊa new language.åÊAs the eels demand ‰ÛÏAttendance Required‰۝ on theiråÊflyer for the infamous Special Extermination Music Night,åÊlistening is absolutely mandatory for this seminal band.åÊRecommended for fans of Dead Boys, Simply Saucer andåÊPagans.
