Records Of The Year 2020

You don't need me to tell you about this year, we've all been through it, but I think it's safe to say that this year, more than any other, music has been a salve. With the shop being shut I've spent a lot of time walking the streets of Southend hand delivering records, which gave me time to really pay attention to the records I love. Putting them in any order is something that keeps me awake at night, I don't think any of us consider music in competition terms, and it's fair to say that after the first 10 or so the numbers are meaningless. I love all of my children equally.

As usual, I feel it's important to state that I don't consider my opinion here to be any more valid than anybody else's, these are just the records I've loved. Hopefully you'll love them too. There's a Spotify playlist at the bottom to check them out.

So here you go, our favourite records of 2020:

1. Eddie Chacon - Pleasure, Joy And Happiness [BUY]

You'll know Eddie Chacon's voice from his time in briefly popular soul duo Charles & Eddie, whose Would I Lie To You was a radio staple for years (quite rightly too, it's an absolute tune). After the death of his singing partner and a disillusioned retreat from singing, Eddie Chacon tentatively returned to it recently with Solange and Frank Ocean collaborator John Carroll Kirby. Pleasure, Joy And Happiness is the result, creating a record of woozy celestial grown up soul. It came out quietly in the US earlier this year (the UK vinyl release is due imminently), picking up devotees along the way - just read the Guardian's gushing piece from a few months ago.

You don't need me to tell you about this year, but speaking for myself I've found music to be the best way through it, and Eddie's album has been on non-stop for months, a constant companion in a time when that's what we all need. What more could you ask?
