Eternal Rhythm: Ashra - New Age of Earth
By 1976, Manuel Göttsching had already helped define the Berlin School’s exploratory spirit with Ash Ra Tempel, but New Age of Earth marked a quiet reinvention. Now recording simply as Ashra, Göttsching set aside the heavy cosmic jams and embraced a more meditative approach, replacing drum kits and fuzz guitars with flowing synthesizer lines and crystalline textures. It was a shift from the communal chaos of the early ’70s to something more introspective - less about the trip and more about the stillness after arrival.
The album unfolds like a slow dawn. Opener “Sunrain” pulses gently, its repeating arpeggios building into a bright, almost hypnotic shimmer. “Ocean of Tenderness” drifts further inward, a long, tidal piece where synth tones stretch and recede like breath. The side-long “Deep Distance” plays with space and patience, each note suspended in the air, while closing track “Nightdust” feels like a soft dissolve into darkness. There’s no hurry here; Göttsching’s guitar, when it appears, is woven into the fabric rather than pushed to the front, blurring the line between human touch and machine pulse.
While it shares DNA with Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, New Age of Earth feels lighter and more open, more in tune with the pastoral minimalism that ambient music would explore in the decades to follow. In 1976, this wasn’t yet labelled “ambient” or “new age” - the latter term would only later attach itself to the record, somewhat by accident - but Göttsching’s blend of repetition, warmth, and clarity pointed to a whole new musical language.
Nearly fifty years on, the album hasn’t aged into obscurity; it has grown into a touchstone. Electronic musicians still borrow its sense of flow and restraint, and listeners keep returning to its unforced calm. New Age of Earth doesn’t demand attention - it earns it slowly, inviting you to settle in, breathe, and let the minutes stretch. It’s not just a landmark of German electronic music; it’s one of the rare records that can change the pace of your whole day.
