Don't go outside: This week at South

Phoebe Bridgers returns this week with Lost Weekend, her first solo album in six years and the follow-up to 2020's Punisher. In the years since she's released the record with boygenius, picked up three Grammys and become one of the biggest songwriters of her generation, but Lost Weekend brings the focus back to her solo work across 16 new songs.

Also this week, all three albums from The Sundays are finally back on vinyl - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, Blind and Static and Silence. Sweeping Promises return with You Say I Romanticize, their third album, bringing a rawer, more urgent edge to their wiry, stripped-back post-punk. There are a couple of excellent archival releases too, with Now-Again collecting the complete recordings of obscure Indianapolis soul group The Hamilton Movement on She's Gone, while Numero dig into the catalogue of Chicago producer Lenny LaCour with the 26-track Magic Touch. Michael Yonkers' extraordinary Microminiature Love, recorded in 1968 but left unreleased until 2002, is also back on vinyl through Sub Pop.

And a few from the last couple of weeks that we hadn't mentioned but really should have: Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats gets a 30th anniversary edition with an extra LP of demos, B-sides and outtakes; there are new CTI reissues from Kenny Burrell and Ron Carter; and Minor Threat's collection of their first two EPs is back on Crystal Red vinyl. As always, you'll find all of this week's new releases in the shop and online now.

Mort Garson and Cyrus Faryar’s The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds is a tripped out slice of late-’60s psychedelia, built around twelve tracks inspired by the signs of the zodiac. Released in 1967, it mixes Garson’s early Moog electronics with sitar, percussion and Faryar’s spoken-word narration, creating something that sits somewhere between psychedelic rock, early electronic music and a particularly cosmic astrology session. A fascinating early example of the Moog finding its way onto record. UK first pressing right here.
