Eternal Rhythm: Numero Group's Spiritual Soul
The latest stop on Numero Group’s long-running Eccentric Soul series trades sweat-soaked dance floors for something more reflective. Eccentric Spiritual Soul is a rare groove collection with its gaze turned inward, drawing together private-press 45s and album cuts that drift at a slower pace, laced with lush horn and flute arrangements, anchored by warm, unhurried rhythms. It’s music for Sunday afternoons, for moments when the world feels quieter, and the line between soul and spiritual jazz blurs.
From the opening shimmer of Spunk’s “La Bimini,” the compilation sets a tone of soft light and wide horizons. Kalima’s “(Where Is The) Sunshine Pt. I” follows with a sun-drenched sway, while Calvin Keys - best known for his work on the storied Black Jazz Records label - offers the tender ballad “You Are All I Need.” Lenny White’s “Sweet Dreamer” and Steve Parks’ instrumental “Still Thinking of You” keep the first side in a mellow, meditative mood, each track carried by fluid grooves and graceful melodic turns.
Side B eases further into the atmosphere. Steve Harvey’s “Island In The Sky” drifts like its title, airy and expansive, before Father’s Children deliver the deeply soulful “Linda Movement.” The Chronicle Church’s “Mystery” is a moment of pure devotional soul, rooted in gospel but shaped by contemporary R&B textures. 24 Carat Black’s collaboration with LaRhonda LeGette on “Speak Low” slows the tempo to a hush, the vocals almost weightless over the arrangement. Closing cut “Little Black Child” by General Lee & Lost Weekend leaves the listener with a bittersweet grace, its gentle sway carrying an unmistakable emotional weight.
What ties these songs together is a shared sense of space and intention. There’s groove here, but it’s unforced; the horns, flutes, and rhythm sections all breathe in time, allowing the melodies to linger. Like the best of Numero’s work, it’s both a deep archival dig and an album that flows like it was always meant to exist in this sequence.
Eccentric Spiritual Soul is a set of rare, beautiful recordings that feel perfectly at home in moments of quiet thought, a long drive at dusk, or a slow wander through a park. Flute not included, but the serenity is built in.
