Light touch: This week at South Records
Howling Bells are back with Strange Life, their first album in over a decade, a darker, more lived-in take on their hypnotic indie rock, available as a limited glow-in-the-dark Dinked Edition. Singer Juanita has a message for you too. Ulrika Spacek’s Expo also lands on limited blue vinyl for indies, a colder, more electronic-leaning evolution of their hazy, art-rock sound. Velocity Girl’s ¡Simpatico! returns remastered and expanded, pairing their melodic 90s indie classic with a full set of B-sides and rarities on petrol/magenta vinyl. Also new: Tears Before Bedtime from The Would-be-goods, a richly detailed collection of elegant guitar pop, witty, romantic and timeless, and a new album from Young Marble Giants songwriter Stuart Moxham, whose quietly distinctive minimalism and emotionally direct songwriting continue to evolve, blending understated arrangements with off-centre pop craft.

Are You Experienced didn’t just introduce Jimi Hendrix, it rewired rock music overnight. Psychedelic, explosive and endlessly inventive, it blends raw power with studio experimentation and some of the most iconic guitar playing ever recorded. A debut that still feels like a shock to the system. We have a 1973 promo copy in at the moment, alongside a promo of Axis Bold As Love, and a first pressing of Electric Ladyland (not pictured here for obvious reasons).
