Midday sun: This week at South Records

It's a big week for new releases, led by Jack White's blistering seventh studio album Frozen Charlotte, recorded at Third Man Studio with the same raw, full-throttle energy that made No Name such a triumph. The Rolling Stones return less than three years after Hackney Diamonds with Foreign Tongues, another confident, forward-looking collection produced by Andrew Watt and available in some very nice deluxe editions. Panda Bear & Sonic Boom reunite for A ? of When, expanding the adventurous, playful chemistry of Reset into new territory, while Michael Brook's beautiful Cobalt Blue finally returns to vinyl alongside the first-ever vinyl release of Live at the Aquarium, celebrating one of 4AD's most overlooked gems. Cat Power's masterpiece The Greatest marks its 20th anniversary with a gorgeous pink vinyl edition and the return of the original pink foil sleeve. There's also a brilliant new collection of heavyweight '70s Jamaican takes on American soul and R&B classics, alongside the latest collaboration from Joseph Shabason & Nicholas Krgovich, Four Days in June, a warm and understated set of beautifully crafted songs drawing inspiration from Neil Young, R.E.M. and classic Canadian alt-country. Rounding things off, Holy Wave return with i'm DADA, tightening their psychedelic dream-pop into hypnotic, groove-led songs that feel both immersive and surprisingly direct. As always, you'll also find plenty of reissues, restocks and fresh used arrivals waiting in the racks.

The album where everything clicked. Released in 1970, T. Rex saw Marc Bolan shorten the band's name and move away from the more sprawling psych-folk of the Tyrannosaurus Rex years towards the leaner, riff-driven sound that would soon explode into glam rock. Tracks like Jewel, The Visit, and the single Ride A White Swan bridge those two worlds perfectly, making this one of the most important stepping stones in Bolan's remarkable catalogue. 1972 Japanese pressing right here
