Soft inheritance: This week at South
A strong week led by The Black Keys’ Peaches!, a raw, stripped back record recorded live in the room, full of blues rock grit and the duo’s deep love of vintage soul and funk 45s. KNEECAP return with FENIAN, a confrontational, high energy mix of rave, rap and electronic styles, pushing from acid house through trip hop and dubstep with sharp hooks and real force.
Elsewhere, mclusky continue their long awaited return with more of their wiry, explosive post punk, while UltraBomb, featuring members of Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum and Social Distortion, deliver direct, hard hitting punk with real pedigree behind it. Funkadelic’s Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow lands as a psychedelic funk landmark, loose, heavy and deeply exploratory. Ana Roxanne’s Poem 1 moves in the opposite direction, sparse and intimate, built around voice, piano and atmosphere, while Glissandro 70’s long lost recordings resurface as a blend of afrobeat influenced rhythm, leftfield electronics and loose, dubby experimentation. Laibach return with a maximal, pop leaning record that pulls from eurodance and electronic music while twisting it into something darker, Cindy deliver hushed, melodic indie that feels both intimate and elusive, and Brighton’s ladylike balance folk and post rock textures with a quiet, controlled build. White Denim’s 13 closes things out, a groove heavy mix of rock, funk, soul and blues, restless and wide ranging, available as a limited Dinked Edition.

Rubber Soul marks a real turning point for The Beatles, where the rush of early pop gives way to something more introspective and fluid. There’s a warmth to it, acoustic guitars, folk leanings, tighter songwriting, but it still carries that effortless melodic instinct throughout. This is a first pressing from 1965, with the original Times New Roman label text, YEX 178-2 / YEX 179-2 matrices cut in November that year, and the original inner sleeve intact, a clean, early copy of one of their most important records.
