Ultramarine Live At South 15/11/14

On Saturday Ultramarine came down to sunny (rainy) Southend to play live in the shop.  The gig was to coincide with the re-issue of 1991's Every Man And Woman Is A Star on Rough Trade. It was all filmed and recorded, so hopefully soon enough we'll have some footage to share.  In the meantime, here's some photos by Mark Lancaster Every Man And Woman Is A Star is in stock here. "Everyone had a lovely time and were grateful their attentions were not distracted the lure of the Hoff turning on the Southend Xmas lights (the Essex version of Sophie's Choice).  Love from Rachel (aged 33 and 1/2)" Indeed.

Ultramarine - Live at South

On 3rd November, 2014, Rough Trade will reissue Ultramarine's pioneering 1991 album Every Man And Woman Is A Star.  To coincide we have them playing live on Saturday 15th November at 1.30pm at South (their first ever gig in Essex no less!) “Perhaps the first and best stab at that seeming contradiction-in-terms, pastoral techno... all sun-ripened, meandering lassitude and undulant dub-sway tempos... like acid-house suffused with the folky-jazzy ambience of the Canterbury scene.” - Simon Reynolds (Energy Flash) Ultramarine have toured with Orbital, Bjork, and many others, released acclaimed albums on Rough Trade and Blanco Y Negro and collaborated with Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, David McAlmont, and Lol Coxhill

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages In-Store

On Thursday 15th May (our two month anniversary fact fans), Barrence Whitfield & The Savages drop by to christen our shop with our first ever in-store performance.   They'll be playing a short set from 5.30pm, before heading over to the Railway for a gig that evening.  Make sure you arrive early, as we're a small shop and can only fit in so many people! If you're not familiar with Barrence and his Savages, sit back and let me fill you in with a potted history: Barrence Whitfield is a full-throttle soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke. He has been described as the owner of one incredible pair of lungs, with limitless energy...
