Take your time: This week at South Records
This week's new releases are led by Teenage Fanclub, who return with their 13th album, Do Not Dare To Dream. Recorded on the remote Scottish island of Great Bernera, it's another lovely collection of melodic guitar pop, with the band's familiar harmonies and warm guitars joined by organs, Mellotrons and synths. Available on black vinyl and limited indies-only orange vinyl.
Osees return with Off Course, a collection of organ-driven psych rock, extended jams and unpredictable twists, while Death Valley Girls' Welcome to Earth is a deeply personal but ultimately uplifting album of psychedelic garage rock, written following Bonnie Bloomgarden's loss of her home in the California wildfires. Gnod are back at their heaviest on Chronicles Of Gnowt (Vol 2), and Karate Boogaloo deliver another excellent collection of stripped-back instrumental funk and soul with Access All Areas.
Koen Holtkamp's Nightlife blends ambient electronics and acoustic instrumentation, with contributions from Greg Fox and Matt Bauder. Cameron Winter releases Live At Carnegie Hall, capturing the Geese frontman's solo piano performance, while Jamie T returns with Ghosts (100 Days of Morning), exploring nostalgia, love and growing older. There's also John Prine's Found Dogs, featuring unreleased recordings, demos and alternate takes from the Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings sessions.
Finally, we've got two excellent jazz reissues: Ahmad Jamal's electric piano-led, orchestral jazz-funk album Jamal '73, and Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas, both newly cut all-analogue from the original master tapes.

This week's recommended album is Core, the 1992 debut from Stone Temple Pilots. Often lumped in with the grunge bands of the era, it's a great collection of heavy, riff-driven alternative rock, with Scott Weiland's distinctive vocals and some brilliant songwriting. Featuring 'Plush', 'Creep' and 'Sex Type Thing', it's an album that's held up remarkably well over the years. First pressing right here.
