Two headed dog: Coming soon to South

Sleep return with Hempispheres, a new album that sees Al Cisneros joined by Dale Crover of Melvins on drums and Void’s Bubba Dupree on guitar. With long-time guitarist Matt Pike no longer in the line-up, it’s a different version of Sleep, leaning more into nuance and space without losing the weight and interplay that made them such a singular band in the first place. The indies-only pressing comes on opaque purple vinyl.

Also up for pre-order is a deluxe edition of Roky Erickson & The Aliens’ The Evil One, collecting the complete 1978/79 sessions across two 45rpm LPs, with the original 415 Records sleeve, rare photos and a new booklet. It includes Two Headed Dog, I Walked With A Zombie and It’s A Cold Night For Alligators, and comes on indies-only black and white splatter vinyl. Beirut City Pop collects ten remarkable recordings from Lebanon’s late ’70s and ’80s private-press cassette scene, moving between disco, soul, jazz, bossa, rock and AOR, much of it recorded and circulated during the Lebanese civil war.

There’s also a new edition of This Heat’s Deceit, their extraordinary 1981 second album and one of the defining records of the post-punk era, mixing tape experiments, fractured rhythms and progressive rock with the looming threat of nuclear war. Finally, Movietone’s Day And Night gets its first reissue since 1997, a beautiful, atmospheric piece of Bristol post-rock from the same orbit as Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation and Crescent, with a new booklet and liner notes from Stephen McRobbie of The Pastels.

A firm shop favourite, Beachwood Sparks’ 2000 debut is a brilliant mix of West Coast psychedelia, country-rock and hazy pop, with plenty of Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers in its DNA.
