Albums Of The Year 2018

If there's one thing music nerds love more than anything, it's a good list. We're no different, and read every list we see - websites, shops, magazines, customers, the lot - and still there's records we miss (can't listen to everything). This time next week this list of 50 could quite easily be 50 different records, and we wouldn't want it any other way. Don't let any of the 'real music' bores tell you nothing good comes out anymore, they're just not paying attention. Every one of these records is worth your time, even if it's 50th in the list, doesn't mean we love it any less than any of the others, it's just, y'know, we had to put them in...

2nd November Newsletter

Album of the week is the latest from ex-Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones, click HERE for more info. Heavenly Records' latest signing audiobooks (their annoying lower case, not mine) release their proggy-electronic debut. 4AD's 80's ethereal goths Dead Can Dance return after 6 years with Dionysus, a typically globe-trotting take on folk traditions. Bob Dylan's much-storied Blood On The Tracks (his best album in my not so humble opinion) sessions gets the Bootleg Series treatment, with a whole host of different versions across a hefty CD boxset or a single LP of highlights. Jon Spencer steps out for his debut solo record, which continues what he does best with the Blues Explosion, Pussy Galore and Boss Hog - skronky high energy punk...

September's shaping up to be be pretty great for new releases. Bristol malcontent's Beak, featuring Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and Will Young (not that one. The one from Moon Gangs) release their new album, the snappily titled >>>. The great Lonnie Holley, the 7th of 27 children (who apparently was once traded for a bottle of whiskey when he was 4 years old) returns with his new record, MITH, an expansive political, largely improvised, album, which is available on limited edition smoke coloured vinyl.
