& The Savages, Barrence Whitfield, DMZ, Essex, in store performance, live, Lyres, South, Southend on Sea, UK -

On Thursday 15th May (our two month anniversary fact fans), Barrence Whitfield & The Savages drop by to christen our shop with our first ever in-store performance.   They'll be playing a short set from 5.30pm, before heading over to the Railway for a gig that evening.  Make sure you arrive early, as we're a small shop and can only fit in so many people! If you're not familiar with Barrence and his Savages, sit back and let me fill you in with a potted history: Barrence Whitfield is a full-throttle soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson...

NME, South, Top of The Shops -

If you didn't have your magnifying glass to hand as you rushed to your local newsagents to purchase this week's New Musical Express you may have missed that we were featured as Top Of The Shops.  Which, as pointed out by Dean, leaves me in the enviable position of having been featured as club of the week and shop of the week in the same magazine (with a 10 year gap between them).  Once my debut album comes out I'll be gunning for that worst artwork of the week award to complete the set.

Four great new albums out this week, all with lovely artwork. Thee Oh Sees new one, Drop, which was preceded by this trippy video, premiered on Stereogum last week Woods return with their new LP With Light And With Love which continues their form of the last few records.  Last time I saw them play (at the ever expensive Cargo in London) they'd added more muscle to their Kraut-folk, which translates well on this album. The legendary Afghan Whigs are also back, with their first album in 16 years Do To The Beast.  And they're back on Sub Pop to top...

This Record Store Day, which takes place on Saturday 19th April, we make our debut! Throughout the day we'll have DJs, including Gregory Wells from Domino Recording Co. and his own Hey Moon label, and Paul Lagden, guitarist in Southend's own rock 'n roll reprobates The Wobbly Lamps. We also have Zoë Howe signing copies of her book Barbed Wire Kisses: The Jesus & Mary Chain Story, which is released exclusively to independent record shops that day.  Zoë has written acclaimed books on The Slits, Wilko Johnson, Florence & The Machine and is currently writing about Dr Feelgood legend Lee Brilleaux...
